The theatre was started at the end of World War II by the Dutch resistance as a way to ensure students with little resources or war orphans with nowhere else to go could make use of the facilities and earn a decent living. Almost 70 years later it is still thriving off the young blood that maintains the theatre 24/7. While showing movies is the primary attraction at Kriterion, the theatre sometimes also hosts film festivals or movie premiers. The primary genre at criterion is art-house or classical movies that still pull crowds after decades.
