Built for the 1928 Summer Olympics, the Olympic stadium was used as the home field of the Amsterdam Football Club Ajax until 1996. It was also used for many other sporting events including field hockey, cycling, and even skating, and formerly serving as the home field for the Dutch national soccer team. It was then renovated and contrary to most arenas, capacity was reduced to target a track and field audience after Ajax moved to the Bijlmer Arena. The stadium will host the 2016 European Athletic Championships. In 2005, the Olympic Stadium became the home of a sports museum, with a focus on the Dutch national teams.
