Mint Tower (Munttoren)

Amsterdam

Buildings and Monuments

The Mint Tower, located behind the flower market, is the oldest in the city. Dating from the 1400's, this tower is all that remains of a wall that used to encircle the City of Amsterdam.  After being partially burned in a fire in the 1600's, it was rebuilt and the spire at the top and the octagonal piece on which is sits were added. This renovation was overseen by famed Dutch architect, Hendrick de Keyser. Later this same century while the Netherlands was occupied by France, money was minted in this tower. Later, in the 1700's, bells were added. The bell tower plays a concert on Saturdays from 2pm-3pm.
