Magere Brug

Amsterdam

Buildings and Monuments

The Magere Brug, or Skinny Bridge, is a very old and famous bridge in Amsterdam. Established in the 17th Century during the Dutch Golden Age, the Skinny Bridge is a very popular tourist hotspot, courtesy of its peculiar design and picturesque surroundings. It's also one of our top choices for the nicest view of Amsterdam. Though the Magere Brug is known as the Skinny Bridge, it is just a metaphorical term now, as pedestrians and bicycles can cross the bridge with ease, and in large numbers. At one point of time, it was literally quite skinny, or narrow, hence the sobriquet 'Skinny Bridge'. This ancient bridge has its own fascinating tale to tell. With a lot of history to offer, there are varied accounts of how it came to being, ranging from historically accurate to simply ludicrous.
